In the past few days I’ve come across several discussions about who the Saints need to pick up in free agency. I’ve heard some ridiculous answers lately. Alshon Jeffery? Alterraun Verner? Vontae Davis? Ben Tate? Brian Orakpo? C’mon Who Dat Nation lets be a little more realistic. Sure those guys would be nice, but they’re way out of our cap range.
So I figured I would put together a realistic offseason list for GM Mickey Loomis to abide by. Here’s what needs to happen:
Sign Raiders DE Lamarr Houston to play opposite Cam Jordan. Houston is a similar type of DE that can rush the passer and stop the run. Move Akiem Hicks to NT. Release Broderick Bunkley.
Sign Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin or Giants WR Hakeem Nicks. Yes, both are coming off injury-ruining seasons, but I’m quite sure we’ll be able to get him at wholesale price. Both will look for chances to prove themselves again and both are more than capable of replacing Lance Moore who we need to release. Also release Darren Sproles and/or Pierre Thomas. Trade for Seahawks backup RB Robert Turbin. Turbin has that bruising style that we lack so much. I know you’re gonna say that Khiry Robinson can do that, but he’s more of a downhill runner that falls forward once he’s hit. Turbin can DELIEVER hits to defenders and keep going.
Sign Bengals DE Michael Johnson and move him to OLB. He’s 6’7″ 270lbs and he’s a prototypical OLB that Rob Ryan would use in the 3-4 scheme. BIG.
Release Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma, Roman Harper, Robert Meachem, and Ben Watson. All for obvious salary cap reasons.
Of course, re-sign Jimmy Graham, and in the off case that we’re not able to do that, then we need to look into drafting a guy like Marcel Jenson from Fresno State, or find a way to trade for Titans TE Taylor Thompson, he can be a good fill in.
1st: TCU CB Jason Verrett
2nd: Missouri DE Michael Sam
3rd: Virginia OT Morgan Moses
4th: Rutgers WR Brandon Coleman
5th: Florida State LB Christian Jones
6th: South Carolina QB Connor Shaw
7th: Oregon DE Taylor Hart
Seen a lot of people say that we need to get more O Linemen. We’re okay as far as that’s concerned. We have depth with guys like OG Tim Lelito, who started a game for Jhari Evans (foot injury). Plus we can always get interior offensive linemen as rookie free agents. If that’s the case then we can maybe pick up a guy like Trai Turner from LSU who most likely won’t be drafted.
All of this is a realistic offseason.
