Well this one could not have gotten much worse for Saints fans. In an absolute must win scenario, Drew Brees had one of the worst games of his career. He ended his all time record of games with a TD tonight against the division rival Falcons. Not only did he not reach the endzone, he threw 5 interceptions. Yes, 5. New Orleans manged only 13 points on the night in a surprisingly low scoring affair at 23-13. The defense played fairly well, holding Matt Ryan to only 165 yards and a score while allowing only a little over half his passes to be completed. However, when your All Pro QB throws 5 picks to 0 Touchdowns you don’t have much of a chance.
New Orleans won the first matchup between these teams with a good balanced attack. They trailed much of the game and went to the passing route. Drew Brees threw a total of 50 passes in this contest, completed 28 of them. That is just over half which doesn’t cut it anymore. The team had only 23 total carries. They managed 101 yards, mostly from the work of Pierre Thomas. With Brees playing so poorly they should have committed more to the rushing attack. It needs to happen in the long run because Brees isn’t going to last forever.
New Orleans only chance at this point is to win all of their games and hope for a lot of help. Green Bay or Chicago basically has the first wild card spot locked up so the second is a fight between Dallas, Washington, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, and Seattle. All 5 of those teams have a better chance than New Orleans so chances are quite slim. With the most recent performance Drew Brees is up to 16 interceptions on the season. No running back on the team has 400 yards on the season. Whether it be Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, Mark Ingram, or Darren Sproles, somebody is going to have to step up and become a lead back. A 4 man committee is just not efficient. Nobody can get a hot hand running to the bench every other play. The defense is a whole other issue. This team has a lot of troubles and Drew Brees’ shoulders can take only so much weight.
