Saints vs. Chiefs Week 3 Preview

Drew Brees continues to light up the box score, but that hasn’t translated into wins for the Saints, who next host the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3.

Brees already has 664 yards passing and four touchdowns on the year, but has only completed 55-of-101 attempts.

He couldn’t do enough to lead New Orleans to a win last weekend as they lost to the Caorlina Panthers 35-27 to put their record at 0-2 this season. The offense was clicking: Brees has 325 yards, Pierre Thomas had nine rushes for 110 yards, and Darren Sproles racke dup 13 catches for 128 yards.

However, the defense, once again, couldn’t stop anyone whatsoever.

And that’s going to be the key this week as well.

There were high hopes for the Saints defense after they went out and got Steve Spagnuolo, a highly respected defensive mind, during the offseason. But the results aren’t looking very promising at all. First New Orleans gave up 40 points to a rookie quarterback and the Washington Redskins, and Cam Newton had his way with the Saints last weekend too.

So, we know the key offensive guys for New Orleans: Brees, Sproles, Marques Colston and Jimmy Graham. That said, the X factor for this team is the defense.

Perhaps the Saints will be able to fare much better against a struggling Chiefs team. Kansas City has lost both of its games as well and can’t seem to stop anyone from scoring at will as well.

Something has to change for New Orleans though. We’re starting to doubt whether the Saints will be the majority play in the NFL picks for Week 3, holding near nine-point chalk, but after the first two weeks it wouldn’t be surprising if people stayed away.

We have to see more out of Brees and company first.
