The Saints have had a rough offseason but they’ll get to put it behind them when the live action starts in Week 1. They’re handed a tough challenge in the opening week as they will host an improved Washington Redskins squad but it’s nothing that a focused Saints team should struggle with. After all, New Orleans was a perfect 8-0 at home last season.
The Redskins appear to have a number of weaknesses that should play right into the hands of the Saints, which is why the New Orleans Saints are a big favorite on the NFL odds. We’ll have to see if that’s how it plays out.
Washington Redskins @ New Orleans Saints
Betting Line: Saints -7.5
Everyone knows the key to stopping the Saints is to get to Drew Brees or to stop the passing game but the Redskins secondary is not the strength of their defense. Last season, DeAngelo Hall really struggled and Josh Wilson was mediocre. On top of that, the Redskins decided to replace both starting safeties.
If there are any communication breakdowns or this unit is not in sync, the Saints will pick them apart.
On defense, the Saints love to bring pressure and get after opposing quarterbacks and their job should be made easier by the fact that the Redskins starting offensive line is missing right tackle Jammal Brown. The Redskins protection has been spotty in the preseason and the Saints will try to take advantage. At the very least, if the Redskins can’t open up lanes for their running backs, it could be a long day for RGIII.
Even so, the Saints shouldn’t take the Redskins lightly. Any team from the NFC East is going to be a challenge and this should be a good contest for the Saints to start the 2012 season. It’s manageable and if they play focused, they’ll come away with the win.
