The New Orleans Saints have had a tumultuous offseason, so they’ll be happy to have a very manageable opponent in Week 1. After all, the last thing they want is all of those offseason problems trickling over into the regular season.
The Washington Redskins come to town with a rookie quarterback getting his first NFL start. While there are big expectations for Robert Griffin III, winning in New Orleans is a very tall order to kick off his career.
The Redskins have some clear flaws that should lead to a Saints victory, assuming they’re not looking ahead.
Washington Redskins @ New Orleans Saints
Betting Line: Saints -9
The NFL odds show the New Orleans Saints at a nine-point favorite at home and there are some clear reasons why that’s the case. The Washington Redskins are flawed in a couple of key areas, which just so happen to be the Saints strengths.
For starters, the Redskins secondary is riddled with question marks. DeAngelo Hall is an underachiever and Josh Wilson hasn’t impressed. The team is also starting two new safeties. If there are any communication errors or these defensive backs are in the right place at the right time, Drew Brees will pick them apart. Truth be told, he’ll probably pick them apart anyways.
The other area where the Redskins will likely be exposed is on their offensive line. Right tackle Jammal Brown is out at least six games while the rest of this unit is a concern. The Saints should be able to get pressure on RGIII all day long.
New Orleans was 8-0 at home last season and has protected their home-field quite well in the Brees era. Although they’re without head coach Sean Payton for this one (as they will be for the entire season), they should be able to get a win in Week 1.
