Happy Labor Day! Unfortunately for the Saints DE Will Smith, and LB Jonathan Vilma, they have no upcoming labor to be celebrating for. Will Smith will not be able to return to the field until after the Saints fourth game, meanwhile, Jonathan Vilma is not going to be able to return to football until the 2013 season. The two were hoping to have their suspensions lifted, or at least reduced, but neither had any luck in their attempts to get Roger Goodell to show them mercy. It still remains unclear to the public how involved Vilma and Smith were with bounty program, and many still question Goodell’s motive for the harsh suspensions, accusing him of using this to support the NFL’s position in their concussion lawsuits to show that they are doing everything they can to keep the players safe.
Regardless of whether or not the suspensions are justified, the fact remains that the suspensions have still been upheld and neither Vilma or Smith can speak with Saints management, nor can they enter their training facilities until their current suspensions are either over, or reduced. Don’t count on them being reduces.
